While it was obvious that Spider-Man: No Way Home was going to have a very healthy opening weekend at the worldwide Box Office, especially given the pre-sale ticket numbers, the fact that it has been released in the midst of a global pandemic meant there was still an air of uncertainty around quite how well the Jon Watts directed trilogy capper would actually do.
Well, we needn't have worried as Spider-Man: No Way Home has taken an enormous $587 million in it's opening weekend. This is especially impressive considering the film hasn't opened in China yet and for now, although it remains to be seen if it will at all.
For comparison, No Time To Die took $119 million in it's opening weekend. The James Bond epic, which was released in October, is currently sitting on $773 million worldwide and it would seem like it's only a matter of days before it's overtaken by the latest installment in Marvel Studios' Phase 4.
Whilst it's nowhere near Avengers: Endgame's $1.2 Billion opening weekend (yes, seriously!), it's still managed to claim the third biggest opening weekend of all time, sitting behind Avengers: Infinity War's $640 million.
Spider-Man: No Way Home has been out for less than a week and it's very likely it will become the first film of the pandemic era to cross the $1 billion mark.
Has cinema been saved? That remains to be seen. It's very rare that a film has the same level of anticipation and speculation that Spider-Man: No Way Home has had over the last few months and while many are looking forward to The Matrix Resurrections, it's difficult to imagine that will make the same impact at the Box Office (especially as it's released on HBO Max on the same day in North America), and there doesn't seem to be anything that has the same level of hype as No Way Home until The Batman in March.
Spider-Man: No Way Home, directed by John Watts, is in cinemas now and stars Tom Holland (Peter Parker / Spider-Man), Zendaya (M.J.), Benedict Cumberbatch (Dr. Stephen Strange / Doctor Strange), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan), Willem Dafoe (Norman Osborn / Green Goblin), Alfred Molina (Doc Ock), Jamie Foxx (Electro) and J.K. Simmons (J. Jonah Jameson).
