SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Fails To Qualify For BAFTAs

Sony Pictures have begun their Oscars campaign to get Spider-Man: No Way Home a Best Picture nomination, but the film will not be recognised by the BAFTAs as the film has failed to meet the required eligibility criteria.

This is due to the fact that Sony Pictures failed to upload the film to 'BAFTA View', a streaming site for BAFTA voters, before the end of the first round of voting.

"Spider-Man: No Way Home did not meet the eligibility criteria for the EE British Academy Film Awards 2022 and therefore did not qualify for entry," announced BAFTA in an official statement. "As outlined in our rulebook, all films must be made available to voting members on BAFTA View prior to Round One voting closing to ensure fairness and parity for all titles and the film was not made available by the distributor."

The reason Sony decided against uploading the film to BAFTA View was most likely to avoid spoilers leaking, as well as the film being pirated before release. It's a huge shame that the film will not get an opportunity to be nominated for the British equivalent of the Academy Awards and also missed out at the Golden Globes for similar timing reasons.

This means the Oscars are the only chance Spider-Man: No Way Home has left to gain any major nominations, although given the ceremonies previous record when it comes to superhero movies, it's highly unlikely it'll be nominated for anything outside of the technical categories if anything at all.

Spider-Man: No Way Home, directed by John Watts, is in cinemas now and stars Tom Holland (Peter Parker / Spider-Man), Zendaya (M.J.), Benedict Cumberbatch (Dr. Stephen Strange / Doctor Strange), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan), Willem Dafoe (Norman Osborn / Green Goblin), Alfred Molina (Doc Ock), Jamie Foxx (Electro) and J.K. Simmons (J. Jonah Jameson).
