Although it's highly unlikely that Spider-Man: No Way Home will secure many, if any, Academy Award nominations come March, that isn't stopping Sony Pictures from trying regardless.
Superhero, sci-fi and fantasy movies generally don't fare well at the Oscars, with The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Black Panther being rare exceptions to the rule. Whilst Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse ended up winning Best Animated Movie at the 2019 ceremony, there hasn't been a single nomination for a live action Spider-Man movie since Spider-Man 2 earned 3 nominations at the 2005 Academy Awards, all of which were for the film's technical achievements. Spider-Man: No Way Home failed to gain any nominations at this years Golden Globes, although the film was released after those awards were announced.
Even still, Sony Pictures have begun their marketing campaign, including a push for Best Picture, and two images from their campaign have appeared online, which you can see below.
Traditionally, superhero movies have to rely on a Best Visual Effects nomination, but considering that the Lizard and Sandman somehow looked worse than they did in their original movies, we're not holding out much hope.
