NO WAY HOME's Premise Was Originally Intended For The 4th Tom Holland Movie

At the end of 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home, Spider-Man's world was turned upside down when, in one last dastardly act, Mysterio revealed Peter Parker's identity to the entire world.

This set the stage for Tom Holland's third solo outing, with Peter having to deal with the fallout of Mysterio's actions. But now it has been revealed by writer Chris McKenna (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Ant-Man and the Wasp) that one major aspect of Spider-Man: No Way Home was originally intended as a post-credit stinger, setting up an eventual fourth film for the wall-crawler. The post-credit scene in question would have set Peter up against members of the Sinister Six.

"We go, ‘OK, we know that we’re dealing with the fallout from that. What would happen?'" revealed McKenna in a new chat with The Wrap. "And that led us down different story roads that were not this story. And then, I don’t know if it was Kevin [Feige’s] idea, the idea of doing something with the other villains and teasing that at the very end [of the movie], I think in a tag was floated."

"So we were coming up with different storylines that would just sort of write towards a tag like that," added McKenna. "So inevitably we were like, ‘What if Kraven? What if [Other Villains?] and we were kicking around a lot of different ideas and then finally one day, for various reasons – there were reasons why we couldn’t do certain storylines – I think it was Kevin who goes, ‘Remember that idea with all the villains that we were talking about for a tag? That Sinister Six idea? Why don’t we just do it in the movie? Make this movie be about that?’ and then that just sort of blew everything open."

We didn't quite get the Sinister Six in No Way Home and had to settle with five, although considering Tom Hardy and Venom ended up in the film anyway, it's puzzling why they didn't just go the whole hog. If it was scheduling issues, they could have made him full CG as they did with Sandman and Lizard, but perhaps they have bigger things planned for Venom down the line (especially given that post-credit scene!)
