The History Of Spider-Man At The Oscars

This evening sees the 79th editioin of the and

Spider-Man (2002)

Directed by: Sam Raimi

Starring: Tobey Maguire, Willem Dafoe, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Cliff Robertson, Rosemary Harris

Nominations: 2

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 90%

When the original Spider-Man movie came out, superhero movies in general were in a very different place to where they are now. The abysmal Batman & Robin threatened to ruin the prospects of any comic book movie, and whilst Blade and X-Men were surprise hits, they had nowhere near the same level of success compred to what we're used to Marvel movies achieving today.

So when Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man movie smashed records, becoming the first movie to take over $100 million in it's opening weekend, Hollywood was forced to take notice. It arguably jumpstarted the Superhero cinematic wave that we're still riding today, and it was rewarded by the Academy with two Oscar nominations; for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.

The film would lose to The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Chicago, respectively, but there's no arguing that the era of the superhero movie was now well underway.

Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Directed by: Sam Raimi

Starring: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Alfred Molina, Rosemary Harris, Donna Murphy

Nominations: 3

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 93%

Widely regarded as not only one of the best superhero sequels, but one of the best superhero movies of all time, it's no surprise that Sam Raimi's sequel, Spider-Man 2, picked up another 3 Oscar nominations for the wall crawler.

The film ended up with nominations for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing, losing out to Pixar's The Incredibles and the Jamie Foxx starring Ray respectively, but earned Spider-Man his first ever Academy Award, coming ahead of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and I, Robot to win Best Visual Effects.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Directed by: Anthony and Joe Russo

Starring: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Don Cheadle, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Josh Brolin, Chris Pratt

Nominations: 1

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 85%

Not strictly a Spider-Man movie, but one that featured a healthy dose of Tom Holland's Peter Parker, Avengers: Infinity War ended up with a nomination for Best Visual Effects but eventually lost out to First Man.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (2018)

Directed by: Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman

Starring: Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Li, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Luna Lauren Velez, John Mulaney, Kimiko Glenn, Nicholas Cage, Kathryn Hahn, Liev Schreiber

Nominations: 1

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 97%

Miles Morales' first cinematic outing became the second Spider-Man movie to win an Oscar, following 2004's Spider-Man 2, whilst also becoming the second Marvel related property to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Picture, following Big Hero 6.

The film did relatively low box office numbers for a Spider-Man movie, but with good word of mouth and an Academy Award to its name, we'll be seeing two sequels, the first of which will be released in October of this year!

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Directed by: Anthony and Joe Russo

Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillen, Danai Gurira, Benedict Wong, Jon Favreau, Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow, Josh Brolin

Nominations: 1

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 94%

Considering that Avengers: Endgame became the highest grossing movie of all time (for a short while at least) and almost universal critical acclaim, many thought that the fourth film in the Avengers franchise was a shoe-in for Best Picture and maybe even scoring nominations for Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.) and Best Original Score (Alan Sylvestri). Alas, it wasn't to be, and the film had to settle for a Best Visual Effects nomination, losing to 1917.
