It really should go without saying that there will be spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home here, so if you haven't seen the film yet, you've only got yourself to blame if you carry on reading!
It's been a few weeks now since the release of the epic MCU Phase 4 movie Spider-Man: No Way Home and a lot of people have questions about that ending.
Well, fortunately for us, the film's writers Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna (Homecoming, Far From Home, Ant-Man and the Wasp) have recently spoken with Variety and have opened up about how they approached the film's ending.
"We were like, do we do a Back to the Future kind of thing where you see him fading out of photos? Does he still have a driver's license or a passport? It just led to more questions. We decided, let’s try to do it in the most satisfying way and just focus on the emotion of it. And then if people have questions about some of those details that didn't get answered here, we'll answer them hopefully in another movie somewhere down the line." said Sommers after being asked to what extent has everyone forgotten about Peter Parker.
It's interesting that they mention the "Back to the Future kind of thing" because it's interesting to wonder if M.J. still has the drawing of Peter from Spider-Man: Homecoming, which could be seen on her bedroom wall in the latest film. However, it's more than likely that small things like that will have vanished for the sake of making life easier, otherwise, Spider-Man 4 will just be a series of events explaining every little detail and plot hole that No Way Home's ending potentially creates, something that Chris McKenna elaborates on...
"Obviously, some sort of magical redaction has occurred," said McKenna. "At the end of all this, we didn't want a lot of people trying to do magical math in their head. People had these experiences, but they start forgetting the person they knew, but they were still affected by the events that happened."
Finally, McKenna spoke about the scene at M.J.'s workplace. "You want to have that doughnut scene be him making the last piece of the sacrifice... I could tell them everything. I can try to get my friends back. But I’d be going right back to the place of endangering my loved ones by bringing them into my life. And I can’t have that."
While Kevin Feige has said they've started thinking about what Spider-Man 4 could be, it's likely going to be a long time before we hear anything about Spidey's fourth outing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
